Getting a Tattoo on Holiday in Istanbul: Planning and Aftercare Tips
A tattoo is one of the most personal souvenirs you can bring home from Istanbul. To make sure it heals perfectly, a little planning helps. Here is what we tell every traveler who visits Dreamer Tattoo in Bakırköy.
Book Early in Your Trip
Try to schedule your tattoo at the beginning of your stay rather than the last day. This gives you time to follow the first days of aftercare calmly and to show us the tattoo if you have any questions before flying home.
Sun, Sea and Pools
A fresh tattoo is an open wound for the first two to three weeks. Avoid swimming in the sea, pools, hammams and saunas, and keep the tattoo out of direct sunlight. If you are planning beach days on the Turkish coast after Istanbul, consider getting your tattoo at the end of the beach part of your holiday, or choose a placement that clothing can cover.
Flying With a New Tattoo
Flying is fine. Wear loose, clean clothing over the tattoo, keep it clean and moisturized, and carry a small fragrance-free aftercare cream in your hand luggage.
Basic Aftercare
- Remove the protective wrap after the time your artist tells you.
- Wash gently 2–3 times a day with lukewarm water and fragrance-free soap.
- Pat dry with a clean paper towel and apply a thin layer of aftercare cream.
- Do not pick or scratch scabs.
- Use high-SPF sunscreen once the tattoo has fully healed to keep colors bright.
Choose a Design That Fits Your Schedule
If you only have a few days, a small or medium tattoo that can be finished in one session is ideal. Larger custom pieces can be started during your visit and completed on your next trip to Istanbul.
